1. START A NEW TRADITION

This might sound a little bit weird, but when I was very little I didn’t like celebrating my birthday, maybe because some of the craziest – and saddest – events seemed to be happening that same day.

However, that’s why I renamed my birthday “My Lazy Pizza Day” and it basically consisted of doing nothing but eating pizza and lay on the couch watching my favorite cartoons.

Nothing much has changed, I just replaced cartoons with Riverdale and The Walking Dead.

Long story short: if you don’t like spending Valentine’s Day alone, and it brings some more negativity into your life (maybe because it reminds you of your ex), then just change it!

Simply delete it from your calendar and spend it doing something you love, instead.

 

2. HAVE A SOLO DATE

Take yourself out, or order a takeaway.

Drink wine, put on some music, make a face mask, enjoy a bubble bath or eat your favorite dessert.

Seriously, is there anything better than a solo date?

3. ATTEND A ‘SINGLE FRIENDS’ PARTY

There’s almost nothing else I love more about Saint Valentine’s day than Single Parties. I mean, they’re just so much fun!  

I used to have this tradition with my single female friends when we would just go out, get drunk and have some crazy kind of fun.

Sometimes we still do, even if we’re not (all) single anymore!

Honestly, spending Valentine’s Day with your friends is one of the best ways to celebrate. Ever.

And whoever says that single equals lonely – or sad –  never joined a Single Party!  

 

4. SEND ANONYMOUS GIFTS TO YOUR FRIENDS

Be someone’s (anonymous) Valentine this year!

Find and send to your friends some relatively inexpensive gifts ( you can do this via Amazon).

It’s gonna make both your friends’ and your day brighter. Guaranteed.

(And it can be deep down funny seeing them struggling to understand who sent them those gifts)

Sometimes making gifts is the best part!

 

5. WATCH My Bloody Valentine

or some other Valentine related horror movie (there are unexpectedly more than you’d think).

 

6. CELEBRATE YOUR DOG

Spend some time with your best friends, cuddle on the couch or take a relaxing long walk together.

I’m pretty sure your dog wouldn’t want another Valentine!

 

7. SPEND IT WITH YOUR SIBLINGS (AND FAMILY)

As we already said, Saint Valentine’s is made to celebrate love.

And what better long-lasting relationship than the one you have with your family? Or even just with your mum?

Go ahead and spend this day with the people that mean the most to you!

 

8. SEND FUNNY CARDS TO YOUR FRIENDS

9. PLAN A TRIP

You don’t have to go to the most expensive places to call it ‘travelling’ – even just taking a walk and explore your city can be fun enough. As long as you do that with brand new eyes.

Walk through the city like you were a tourist, explore less popular places you’ve never heard of, like a new diner or cafe you didn’t even know was there.

Get out of your comfort zone and this will be one of the most exciting trips you’ve ever taken, I promise.

10. THROW A PARTY

We already mentioned the idea of attending a party, but what about actually throwing one, instead?

11. READ

Head over to the bookstore and choose out a couple of novels (they don’t have to be romance ones) then go home, make some mac and cheese, wrap yourself in one of those plush blankets, turn your phone off and just read.

Forget about the outer world and get lost in some amazing adventures, instead.

 

12. NETFLIX MARATHON

Ok, this is basically me every Sunday.

To be completely honest, this is still one of the best – and easiest – ways to spend Valentine’s day for me.

 

13. HAVE A SLEEPOVER

Step one: Invite some friends over, play Mario Kart, watch some movies and make pizza.

14. HAVE A CHEAT DAY

If you’re on a diet – or just trying to eat healthier in general (keep going!) – I think it would be fun to schedule your Cheat Day on Saint Valentine’s day, so that you’re allowed eat whatever you want!

 

15. REALLY APPRECIATE THE BENEFITS OF BEING SINGLE

Don’t get me wrong, I think that having someone special by your side can be such an amazing experience, but take time to remind yourself the benefits of being single, too.

Give thanks for the fact that you can eat cereal for dinner, watch whatever you like on TV (without fighting for it), turn up the thermostat rather than put on another jumper, and do anything else you want!

16. HAVE A DIY SPA DAY

This one never gets old.

Treat yourself to a massage, a mani-pedi, a face mask, whatever!

You can find millions of ideas on Pinterest!

Here are some you can start with:

  • Light some scented candles;
  • Have a hot bath;
  • Pick your favorite nail color
  • Make a homemade face mask or body scrub.
  • Try that hair mask you always read about but never have time to do
  • Create your own essential oil blend for a natural moisturizer
  • Simply lay on the couch, close your eyes, breathe and relaaaaax

17. SPEND SOME TIME WITH YOUR MUM

Take your mommy out to a restaurant of her choice for a nice mother-daughter dinner, or have shopping together!

I mean, she’s still your mum after all!

 

18. GO TO A CAT CAFE’ OR GENERAL CAFE’

If you’ve never heard of these:

yes, it’s an actual thing. If you ask me, the coolest.

And if you’re anything like me, this is something you need to try.

19. TRY YOGA AT HOME

Exercising at home allows you to take your own space and time, without feeling the pressure a group class can give. Especially if it’s yoga we’re talking about.

In this case, YouTube can be your best friend, offering you the chance to choose between many different video classes for completely free!

20. COOK A NICE MEAL FOR YOURSELF

When was the last time you prepared a nice, yummy meal for yourself?

In the spirit of self-care, spend time making dinner from scratch, not a box.

Even if you’re a total disaster in the kitchen, there are tons of easy recipes ideas on Pinterest – or Google – that take as little as 10 minutes and (almost) zero efforts to make!

21. ORDER TAKE-OUT

This day is still about doing things you love, as we already said. So, if you don’t really like cooking – or it ain’t your thing – simply skip it. Order from your favorite takeaway restaurant and still enjoy a precious meal!

 

22. BUY YOURSELF FLOWERS AND LET THEIR SCENT FILL YOUR HOME

You could do this with chocolate, too! Just imagine your entire house smelling like chocolate!

23. GO TO A WINE CLASS

Ok…first of all:

Never underestimate the power of wine! 

This is such a great way to meet new people or catch up with friends. The relaxed atmosphere makes everything easier and more enjoyable (like only wine can do!)  

Pottery, glass-blowing or cooking classes also offer opportunities to learn a new hobby and have fun at the same time.

24. COLOR  

There are multitudes of adult coloring books out there. Pick whichever one peaks your interest and get lost coloring those figures.

Seriously, there are so many options, from Game of Thrones to Vogue-themed.

This is one of my favorites of all times. 

I honestly consider coloring a form of meditation (it’s both a relaxing and mindfulness activity).

25. BOOK A MASSAGE OR NAIL APPOINTMENT

It’s one of the perfect ways to unwind after work and give yourself some relaxing moments.

Indulge in an hour-long massage or facial, or meet your girlfriends at the nail spa for wine and pedicures.

Get a blowout at a dry bar, just because.

 

26. WATCH How to Be Single (and learn a lesson out of it)

It’s a really great movie and you’ll feel empowered as a single girl/guy afterward.

 

27. BUY YOURSELF A PRESENT

Whether it’s a trendy piece that boosts your confidence, new tools or an outrageously priced-candle, buy something that makes you truly happy.

After all, what better day to splurge than Valentine’s Day?

28. DO SOMETHING YOUR EX NEVER WANTED TO DO

There’s always that one thing your ex hated and you loved. C’mon!

If you love to stroll aimlessly through Target for hours but your ex considered that activity pure torture, take this opportunity to do it alone without someone complaining.

Do this also to remind yourself how special you are and that you should never sacrifice the things you love to please someone else (instead, find someone that loves doing them with you, or simply do them alone!).

 

29. COZY UP

Whatever it means for you, just cozy up.

 

30. TURN OFF THE PHONE FOR A FEW HOURS

What you definitely don’t want is spending Valentine’s day scrolling through your Instagram feed, watching all those amazing couple pictures wishing it was you.

What you definitely don’t want is beating yourself down because you don’t have a ‘soulmate’ to spend this day with.  

Allow yourself – even only for a few hours – not to compare everyone else’s life to yours. Just because you’re not there yet, it doesn’t mean you never will.

In the meantime, there are two options:

  1. Spending Saint Valentine’s Day sad, crying in your bed and beating yourself up.

OR

  1. Spending Saint Valentine’s Day with the people you love – or by yourself     (being OK with it) – appreciating what you already have in your life.

Even if you feel like your life is a total mess right now, you’re alive, you’re breathing and you have access to the Internet – otherwise, you wouldn’t be reading this article – and these are already 3 good reasons to be grateful for.

So, please, no excuses!
